Journalists need statistical standards that guarantee more nuance in the numbers on Latinos

There is no way journalists can serve Latinos if they don’t know them. Access to reliable demographic numbers is vital as a place where to start…

Let me share some scenarios that come to mind as a journalist who’s based her entire career on reporting about and for Latinos:

When reporting on remittances, the amounts transferred from the U.S. elsewhere is as essential as the places where they are sent, as important as the intersection of identity, class, education and race of the senders: Are they Dominican-Puerto Rican entrepreneurs of Arab descent or working class Indigenous Salvadorans born to immigrant parents?

9 aprendizajes en el periodismo

Hoy cumplo nueve años de trabajo periodístico.

Para celebrar, les comparto nueve aprendizajes a lo largo de este tiempo:

1️⃣ Cada publicación es un “paritorio”. Los periodistas y creadores de los medios no solemos explicarle a la gente cuánto leer, investigar, preguntar, grabar, editar y escribir y reescribir nos toma hacer nuestro trabajo. En cada publicación, es mucho lo que se puja.

2️⃣ La gerencia del periodismo tiende a ser miope. Ya sea por cuidarse las espaldas o por evitar incurrir en riesgos, editores y gerentes en el periodismo dominicano y estadounidense suelen bloquear iniciativas e innovaciones por falta de visión.

3️⃣ El periodismo es un compromiso con la gente a nivel personal. Hoy día, cuando los niveles de confianza en el periodismo son los más bajos en todo el mundo, los periodistas hemos aprendido que servir a la gente cuando más necesita tener acceso fidedigno a la información es una responsabilidad que pocos saben llevar. Los periodistas necesitamos hacer nuestro oficio siendo muy transparentes y estando directamente conectados con las problemáticas que afectan a nuestra gente y comunidades.

Las industrias periodísticas del continente americano tienen tanto en común como en contraste. Si bien el ajuste de cuentas en torno a los asuntos raciales es más fuerte en Estados Unidos y en Brasil, las conversaciones sobre las brechas de género, el elitismo y la inclusión étnica han sido centrales en el periodismo en México, Chile y Perú. Aún así, encontrar el nuevo mejor modelo de negocios necesario para mantener a flote esto que llamamos periodismo es una conversación transfronteriza, que se volvió mucho más relevante durante la pandemia.

Challenges and Rewards of a Bilingual Latino Journalist in the US

Professor Tom Robbins, the investigative journalist in residence at the CUNYJ School at the time of my 2017 graduation, contacted me before we met. He asked if I’d be interested in sharing my views about journalism and Latinos in the US on a TV show. Former councilwoman and activist Ronnie Eldridge wanted to take an episode to talk with journalists, considering the hostil rhetoric the Trump administration has had with immigrants, with Latinos, and most media people.

Parishioners share some TLC w/ Puerto Ricans

We were all worried for those in the Caribbean. My grandmother’s relatives, my husband’s parents, my cousins and most of my friends and colleagues live in Dominican Republic. And, it was only logical to fear for the flooding and mayor food loss we know the islands would go through during the hurricane season. But this one was different. In a matter of hours, that hurricane, María, traveled towards and hit Puerto Rico right in the middle.

Digital Storytelling at VOA’s LatAm Division

During my Master’s summer internship, I worked with Carol Guensburg, who had been reassigned as VOA’s Bridge Editor early this year, to report between the Central News Desk and the Latin America Division.

As the Bridge Intern, I put my hands on all my preferred mediums, while translating content and interviews from Spanish to English and reporting on foreign policy, science and the environment in the Caribbean and LatAm for my own stories.
