En una mesa redonda, ocho estudiantes de hispanohablantes, algunos nativos y otros no, discuten cómo sobre las desigualdades de salud en los Estados Unidos. Comparan varios conjuntos de datos, agregan a la conversación factores sociales como la composición familiar, hablan sobre casos específicos de Camden y toman notas.
“Entonces, clase, ¿qué podría ser una muerte no intencional?”, Pregunta la instructora en español, aunque su primer idioma es el inglés. “Ahogarse, ¿verdad?”
Taller Puertorriqueño, el centro que lleva 43 años siendo el cultural y social de los latino en Filadelfia, inauguró un edificio de 25,000 pies cuadrados hace dos años en el vecindario de Fairhill. Y el pasado 11 de julio dio a conocer un muro de apreciación con el que dio las gracias a los funcionarios, líderes comunitarios, artistas y socios educativos que les han apoyado durante más de cuatro décadas. At the entrance of the exhibit, waves bathe your feet in the form of a hologram. And, if you close your eyes and listen closely, you might find yourself walking on a Caribbean beach at dusk. This is how the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) attempts to persuade your senses and submerge all its visitors into the most recent scientific discoveries in the depth of the ocean.
During my Master’s summer internship, I worked with Carol Guensburg, who had been reassigned as VOA’s Bridge Editor early this year, to report between the Central News Desk and the Latin America Division.
As the Bridge Intern, I put my hands on all my preferred mediums, while translating content and interviews from Spanish to English and reporting on foreign policy, science and the environment in the Caribbean and LatAm for my own stories.
