Huellas de ejemplo y pasión
The act of reading gives a broader look at all around, it opens your mind, takes you to new places, builds knowledge and understanding, creates a better you. For some Latino cultures, reading is difficult, boring, tedious, an old habit. Why? I don’t know.
Migrar es una acción conocida, de lo más común y antigua, propia del proceso de adaptación y deseo de supervivencia de los seres que vivimos en este planeta.
Preparar el desayuno para los hijos y el marido, trabajador en la industria textil que entra a las 7:00 a.m. y lleva los pequeños consigo hacia el liceo. ¡A limpiar se ha dicho! Pero no toda la casa, porque debe matar la chiva que ha de preparar para mandar al esposo al mediodía para almorzar.
“They admire you or they hate you.” That used to be a common phrase at the newsroom during my year as a journalism intern at the now 127-year-old newspaper Listín Diario. It was a worthy, challenging, dangerous career. And, at the oldest outlet of the Dominican Republic it was the place where only the best-of-the-best could thrive to become and print their words on a sheet to be sold to 10 million inhabitants.
It was also a #JournalismSoMale that none of the digital or print outlets I applied to gave me the opportunity to continue developing my skills, after I won my first National Journalism Award at age 23. It was too much to handle, even for the paper I earned my award from. That was back in 2013.
After I arrived from DR in April, 2015, one of my first job opportunities was as a line producer for a web series project in NYC. It happened thanks to Renato Brea, my college Film Professor from Santiago. Together with actor and poet Francis Mateo, we worked on a six month series published on YouTube about the Dominican diaspora in Northern Manhattan.
La discriminación ha existido siempre, en diversas formas, por diversas razones. Y le ha arruinado la existencia a tanta gente. Muchos han llegado a sumergirse en el olvido de los narcóticos, otros, a dejarse seducir por el suicidio.

Caminando por el Alto Manhattan tras mi llegada reciente a Estados Unidos, me encontré con el sonidista y director de cine Renato Brea.
Nunca pensé yo que quien fue mi profesor de guion y técnica cinematográfica en República Dominicana hace par de años iba a involucrarme en mi siguiente aventura profesional fuera del Caribe.

Qué difícil ha sido construir una mirada hacia la mujer que no esté viciada por la subestimación, lo superficial y la discriminación. ¿Será que desde 1975 han sido mujeres las que han propuesto la reconstrucción de la misma?
